Choosing a cosmetic glass bottle is not only a design decision. The package must protect the formula, work with the selected pump or dropper, run reliably on the filling line and present the brand at the intended price point. A bottle that looks attractive in a rendering can still create leakage, dispensing or decoration problems if the technical details are confirmed too late.
This guide outlines the main decisions an importer, cosmetic brand or packaging buyer should review before approving a glass bottle for production.
1. Start with the formula and application
Define what the bottle will contain and how the consumer will use it. Serums, facial oils, foundations, lotions and fragrances have different viscosity, sensitivity and dispensing requirements. Share the basic formula type with the packaging supplier and confirm whether compatibility testing is required. For light-sensitive formulas, amber glass, color spraying or a secondary carton may provide additional protection.
The application also influences the preferred bottle shape. A stable wide base suits products used at a dressing table, while a slim bottle may support travel sets or premium gift collections. The package should feel balanced when full and remain comfortable to hold and dispense.
2. Confirm capacity and fill volume
Nominal bottle capacity and practical fill volume are not always identical. A 30 ml bottle, for example, still needs sufficient headspace for the selected closure and filling process. Ask for a dimensional drawing, overflow capacity and recommended fill level before finalizing artwork or cartons.
- Confirm the target net content and acceptable tolerance.
- Check total bottle height, diameter and weight.
- Allow headspace for pumps, droppers or treatment closures.
- Verify that the finished pack fits the planned carton and shipping tray.
3. Match the neck finish with the closure
The neck finish determines which pump, dropper, cap or treatment pump can be assembled correctly. It should be evaluated as one system rather than as separate components. Confirm thread or crimp specifications, dip-tube length, gasket material and dosage output. For pumps and droppers, request assembled samples and test repeated use with the actual formula.
Closure appearance matters, but sealing performance comes first. A coordinated cap, collar and actuator can then be developed around a proven functional combination.
4. Compare stock bottles and custom moulds
Stock glass bottles generally offer faster sampling and lower development risk. They are a practical choice for new product launches, multiple SKU programs or projects with a shorter schedule. Brand distinction can still be created through color, printing, frosting, labels and custom closures.
A custom mould is appropriate when a unique silhouette, embossed logo or proprietary capacity is central to the brand. Custom development requires more engineering review, tooling time and validation. Before starting, provide reference images, target dimensions, expected annual quantity and the features that must remain unchanged.
5. Select decoration as part of the package system
Decoration should be chosen according to the bottle shape, artwork, formula environment and required resistance. Common options include color spraying, frosting, screen printing, hot stamping and label application. Curved shoulders, recessed panels and sharp transitions can limit printable areas, so artwork should be reviewed on the actual bottle drawing.

6. Validate before mass production
Sampling is the point where design and engineering meet. Test the complete pack with the intended formula whenever possible. A useful approval checklist includes:
- Formula and material compatibility
- Leakage and sealing performance
- Pump or dropper output
- Dip-tube length and product evacuation
- Decoration adhesion and color approval
- Drop and transport performance
- Filling-line and capping compatibility
Do not approve only from photographs. Physical samples reveal weight, clarity, hand feel, closure alignment and other details that influence the final customer experience.
7. Plan export packing early
Export cartons, dividers, trays and pallets should protect both the glass and its decoration. The correct solution depends on bottle weight, shape, surface finish, closure type and shipping route. Confirm how bottles and closures will be packed, whether they will ship assembled, and how cartons will be labeled for warehouse receiving.
